Jesse Altenburg scrapbooks : scrapbooks, 1914-1923.

Two scrapbooks primarily detailing the minor league career of outfielder Jesse Altenburg. A few articles regarding his call up to spring training with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1915 and 1916 and his 19 major league games. Items of note in Volume 2: Altenburg's 'Certificate of Promotion' from grammar to high school in 1909; an invoice and paid receipt of a 1923 fine he received; a 'Notice of Player Release" dated April 7, 1916; a newspaper team photo of the 1916 Pirates at spring training; two postcards of the inside of Navin Field, postmarked 1914; four 1923 World Series tickets, two for Yankee Stadium and two for the Polo Grounds.

The City of Pttsburgh's first nationally recognized professional baseball club was the Pittsburgh Alleghenies which joined the National League in 1887. The Alleghenies became the Pirates in 1891 when they were accused of "pirating" players from the rival American Association (later the American League). The name stuck. The Pirates participated in the first World Series in 1903 losing to the Boston Red Sox five games to three. The Pirates went on to win World Series titles in 1909, 1925, 1960, 19...
